Shigar Fort — known as Fong Khar ('Palace on the Rock') in the Balti language — is a 400-year-old royal palace perched on a rocky outcrop above Shigar town, 30km from Skardu. Restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture over a decade-long project, the fort is now operated as a heritage hotel by Serena Hotels — one of the most extraordinary places to stay in all of Pakistan.
